To open a locked bedroom door:

  • Check if the door has a keyhole or push-button lock
  • Use a paperclip or bobby pin to pick the lock
  • Insert the tool and gently apply pressure
  • Wiggle until the lock disengages
  • Seek professional assistance if needed

Different Ways On How To Open A Locked Bedrooms Door

Here are some of the different ways you can use to unlock your bedroom door;

Open The Locked Door Using A Card On The Spring Lock

The card will not work for deadbolts, although if your door has a lever or a spring lock, the card will be the best tool to unlock it. While choosing the card to use, pick the one that is not important if it gets damaged.

A credit or debit card and similar cards will not be a good choice. In the process, it might get damaged, and we bet you don’t want to be without them. Insurance cards and your I.D card are significantly important; it’s better not to use them to avoid getting scratched and bent.

Cards such as library cards, store cards, or other easy-replace cards will be the best option.

Unlocking your bedroom door using a card is simple. Take your card and slide in the gap between the door and the doorjamb. Bend it back, forcing the lock back into the door, opening it.

If there is no space in the lock and frame, force your card in between above the lock. Now, swipe quickly downwards, angling the card toward the frame. A thicker and sturdier card is convenient in such a case.

Be patient, though; it can take you several tries to master the mechanism completely. Try both sides, i.e., sliding it downside or upside to see which one gives you a better push on the latch.

Open The Bedroom Door With A Knife

This method is similar to using a card. Of course, you should avoid using a sharp knife unless you don’t have an option. It can cause injuries, so you have to be very careful. Better yet, use a butter knife, spreader, or anything without a sharp blade.

Place the knife between the door and your door frame; slide it down very quickly as you lean against the door, unlocking it eventually.

If you’re lucky enough, it may take you a few trials, or you may need to slide it up.

Open Using A Small Screwdriver

Another more straightforward method is using a small or thin screwdriver. This method works best on the door with privacy handles or interior doors.

Push the screwdriver into the hole on your doorknob straight across as far as you can. Twist or turn the screwdriver for the lock to open.  Use a slotted screwdriver to open your spring lock if you wedge it between the frame and bolt. Wiggle the screwdriver till you push the lock back into the door.

Picking The Lock

The method is a bit complicated, so it will be great to read the instructions first.

For starters, insert the short end of the Allen wrench into the lower edge of the keyhole. With slight pressure, turn the lock slightly in the direction the key would turn. Maintain this pressure as steady as possible, and then place the paperclip with a slight crook into the lock.

Note that there are two different methods for picking the lock. Namely;

The Scrubbing Method

With this method, you need to push the paperclip gently at the lower part of the keyhole and then lift it back upward. Repeat in a circular motion while increasing the pressure steadily with the Allen wrench until the lock shift. Continue while keeping the pressure steady till the door unlocks.

Pin By Pin Method

If the scrubbing method isn’t successful, you can try pin by pin. Keep steady pressure on the Allen wrench while gradually pushing the paperclip in as the paperclip makes contact with a pin, attempt to catch it on the bend, and lift it upward until it snaps into place. Repeat the same with multiple pins until the locks turn.

Remove The Hinges

If none of the above methods works, removing the hinges may be another possibility. To do this, you will need a standard-size flathead screwdriver and a mallet or hammer.

Put the screwdriver at the bottom of the knuckle and pin it on the door. Tap the handle of your screwdriver in a downward direction with the hammer. Once it is loose enough, remove the head and pin.

Repeat the same process with all the hinges. Using a Philips head screwdriver, you may need to use more force to push it out if the pin won’t come out quickly.

Call A Professional

If all fails and you don’t have the energy to try other methods that might destroy your door, call a professional locksmith.

Locksmiths are experts when it comes to breaking and creating locks for your house or car. They can make you a copy of your keys, especially when the original ones get lost.

No matter the situation, a locksmith will have the necessary tools to unlock the door without harming your door. Call your nearest locksmith for help.

Other Methods Of Opening The Door That Can Destroy The Door, Knob, Or Frame

When nothing seems to work out after trying everything possible to unlock the door, you can shift to other options, like kicking it, which might destroy the door, knob, or frame. Sometimes you have emergency cases, and the last thing on your mind is keeping your door safe. In such a case, you can use these methods;

Use a hammer:  You can use a hammer to take out the lock emergency cases. It will only destroy the doorknob and some banging on the door. To unlock the door via this means, take the hammer and smash the doorknob repeatedly. The doorknob will break, eventually opening your door.

Hammer claw: Using a hammer claw is a less invasive way to open the door. Use strong cardboard to put behind the hammer claw to avoid it scraping the wall. Next, fit the hammer claw into the door where the latch is. Apply some force; you can pry the door open.

Be aware this can damage the door, get scratches, and peel the paint. The door handle can suffer the same fate. It’s advisable to replace a new lock after such a procedure.

Drilling: You can use this as a last resort. The drilling will destroy the internal components of the lock, making them unusable. You need to replace the lock and potentially other parts of the door after such a procedure. But if someone is in danger, this will be the quickest option to offer assistance immediately.

How To Open Your Locked Bedroom Door Without A Keyhole?

Bedroom doors or interiors are not always the same. Some will take the key; others will have just a simple hole in the middle. Others don’t have any holes but can lock.

If you have a door with a small hole in the middle, you can fix it quickly. Use a paperclip, skinny screwdriver, or any long skinny item that fits into the hole, thus making it possible to push the locking mechanism.

Put the skinny and straight item into the hole in the center of the doorknob. Apply slight force while pushing the piece till you hear a click. The click is the locking mechanism that will unlock the door.

What Type of Lock is on a Bedroom Door

  1. Knob Locks
    • Knob locks are the most commonly found on interior doors such as those for bedrooms or bathrooms.
    • They have a lock mechanism on one side and a keyhole on the other.
    • Although relatively less secure compared to other types, they’re suitable for rooms that require a basic level of privacy.
  2. Lever-Handle Locks
    • Similar to knob locks, lever-handle locks are frequently found in interior rooms.
    • They are considered easier to open compared to knob locks because of the lever handle.
  3. Privacy Locks
    • Privacy locks are more specific to bedrooms and bathrooms where privacy is necessary.
    • They only have a locking mechanism on the inside of the door and generally feature an emergency release on the outside.
  4. Deadbolt Locks
    • While primarily used for exterior doors, deadbolt locks are sometimes found in bedroom doors, especially in shared residences where higher security is needed.
    • They provide significant security because they can only be opened with a specific key.
  5. Keyless Entry Pads
    • Keyless entry pads can offer additional security and convenience.
    • Users can set or change the code as needed, and many models allow for unique codes for different users.
  6. Smart Locks
    • These are the most technologically advanced types of locks available today.
    • They can be operated via smartphone apps or voice assistants and offer keyless entry, guest access, and a log of who’s entered your room.
