How to Get Old Dog Urine Stains and Smell Out of Carpet

Last Updated on May 16, 2022 By Emma W. Thomas

Pets usually fill the house with joy, but also with a bad smell. Even the best-trained pets can “have an accident” and stain the carpet, especially when it comes to puppies or old pets.

Dog urine stains are problematic for two reasons: they contain germs and bacteria that transmit diseases and also leave a very persistent smell.

Even after cleaning them – because they have ammonia. To clean dog urine stains, it is best to use products that help fight the smell and ensure a deep clean.

Even when carpet cleaning products are the most recommended for combating odors that pets produce, some prefer a more homemade formula. A measure of white vinegar with a measure of water can be a solution as effective as it is quick to remove dog urine stains.

How to Get Old Dog Urine Stains and Smell Out of Carpet

To get rid of dog urine, it is best to follow these three steps: clean the urine, remove solid waste and fight the bad smell.

Clean dog urine:

Use an old towel to absorb excess liquid. It is best to do it as soon as possible when the stain is still wet. You should use a white or light-colored towel to avoid staining the carpet.

Use a carpet cleaner specially designed for this type of stain (you can get it in stores that sell pet products).

Apply the product on the carpet and let it dry. Do not use a common carpet cleaner: dog urine cleaning products contain special agents to remove bacteria from pet urine.

You can also use a homemade cleanser: prepare a solution with a part of water and a part of white vinegar or a mouthwash with alcohol without dyes. Let the product act for half an hour.

To remove excess moisture, you can use a clean towel.

After the carpet dries, vacuum.

Remove solid waste:

Generally, solid waste can be lifted using paper napkins or rubber gloves.

Sometimes, some “solid wastes” are not so solid. If that is the case, try to get as much as possible with cardboard. It is best to do it fast before it dries.

dissolved a little detergent or laundry soap in warm water. Apply the liquid on the stain and rub gently. Be sure to mix well before applying. The more foam, the better.

With commercial products or homemade preparations of mouthwash or vinegar, the procedure is the same: apply on the stain when it is still wet, let dry, and vacuum.

Fight the bad smell:

We all know that the smell of dog urine is not pleasant at all. After cleaning the stains, you will have to do something to eliminate the bad smell.

A very effective homemade solution is to spread over the affected area, already clean, baking soda, or unused ground coffee.

Apply an abundant amount to cover the entire surface and let it act for a few hours (preferably overnight). Finally, vacuum and go! There should be no smell. These products absorb odors that are impregnated on the carpet.

Once you have eliminated the smell of urine, it is important that you know how to educate your dog so that he does not do it again inside your house.

you can make yourself some homemade repellents that will scare away the animal from that place where you always urinate.
